About Dots & Boxes

Dots & Boxes is a free classic pencil-and-paper game brought online. Take turns drawing lines between dots. Complete a box to claim it and go again. When the grid is full, the player with the most boxes wins.

How to play Dots & Boxes

  1. Players take turns drawing one line between two adjacent dots.
  2. If you complete the fourth side of a box, you claim it and play again immediately.
  3. Continue until every box on the grid has been claimed.
  4. The player who owns the most boxes at the end wins.

Tips & strategy

  • Avoid giving away the third side of a box too early.
  • Late-game chain control is everything — plan who opens long runs.
  • Sometimes sacrificing a small box sets up a much larger chain for you.
  • Count remaining boxes so you know when to force the endgame.
